Abstract
Operating within Brazil’s Unified Health System (Sistema Único de
Saúde, or SUS), the world’s largest public health infrastructure,
requires a fundamental paradigm shift for any designer. Although
the SUS provides a continental-scale reference for interoperability
through its National Health Data Network (Rede Nacional de Dados
de Saúde, or RNDS), it also establishes a ‘rigorous standard’ that
private sector products must follow. In Brazil, this regulation by public
agencies acts far beyond a legal obstacle; it is a form of necessary
friction designed to safeguard clinical integrity. The real challenge
to managing this friction is to bridge the gap between process
optimisation and the humanisation inherent in the act of caring.
This article demonstrates how we believe we have accomplished this.
