Abstract
This study explored coach stressors at a major event and provided a focus on Special Olympics (SO) coaches that has been lacking in the sport psychology literature. Data were collected from thirteen SO coaches on sources of stress, coping preferences and perceived effectiveness. Findings indicated that the coaches experienced three broad types of stressors (logistical-organizational, athlete management, and personal needs of the coach) and they tended to draw upon a limited number of coping strategies that were not always effective. Findings suggest that coaches may benefit from preparing for specific stressors and from developing a broader range of coping strategies.
