In the library of the natural history collections of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, located in the Müritzeum in the town of Waren, three botanical print works have been re-discovered, dating back to the 18th century. They comprise collections of nature printings, released by the theologian, progressive educationist and botanist Johann Julius Hecker (1707–1768). This study highlights the author’s life, addresses the historical origin and importance of his botanical publications and provides an outline of the history of plant illustrations in the botanical literature up to the 18th century, including the relevance of nature printings. It finally presents the result of a nation-wide research on the present locations of Hecker’s botanical works.
