Kirchhoff depth migration is a familiar process to transform seismic data measured at the surface into the depth domain in order to obtain an image of the subsurface. For a long time, it was believed that the inverse process to depth migration is Kirchhoff modeling. A closer look however, reveals that a new process has to be introduced as the actual mathematical correct inverse to depth migration, namely demigration. The formulation of an asymptotic inverse integral pair leads to a unique tool to perform various kinds of image transformation.

Unfortunately, this approach still lacks the possibility of modeling, which is not possible straightforward with the demigration process. In this book, a new modeling technique is presented using demigration. Thus for the first time, a link is established between Kirchhoff reflection imaging and seismic forward modeling.

Compared to convetional modeling methods, modeling by demigration makes efficient use of the time-invariant parameters of a subsurface model and therefore the method is especially well suited for modeling time-lapse scenarios.

This book reviews on the one hand the underlying theory for the mentioned image transformations and focuses on the other hand on the development of a practical tool to perform modeling by demigration. applications of seismic image transformations using both migration and demigration as well as applications of modeling by demigration are presented.
