A computer assisted memory training was compared in two applied conditions, utilizing a fixed mnemonic strategy versus a tailored approach. Altogether twelve patients with memory impairments due to acquired brain injuries completed the two training courses, comprising the computerized acquisition of the chaining mnemonic in the fixed training condition and a subsequent individualized approach, the tailored memory training. A pre-test post test comparison with additional multiple baseline procedure assessed subjective memory ratings and objective measures of verbal, visual, and visuo-spatial memory functions. The results indicate that a tailored memory training approach aiming at the individuals respective difficulties, is successful with regard to subjective improvement ratings and produces more pronounced improvements in the specific area of difficulty. The obtained findings also prove that even long time after the initial brain injury cognitive rehabilitation can be successful and that patients do benefit from computer strategy learning and training, especially if it is tailored to their needs.
